Being devoted fans of the movie అష్టా చమ్మా , we were always curious about the game as well. We even bought it once but somehow did not get around to playing it. Well our chance came at last in a recent visit to వరంగల్. At first ఖియాలి played with గాయత్రి అతయ్య (నాన్నమ్మ to her). Then భారతి అతయ్య (also నాన్నమ్మ to her) joined in. The next day I learned it too. I lost the first time but the second time, even though I was way behind for most of the game, I ended up winning in a come-from-behind sweep. The most fun part is rolling the గవ్వలు. They are just so pretty I could stare at them forever. It is rare that we get to play casually with such lovely objects – throwing them and watching how they fall. I thought that the most common throw would be a two – two up and two down … but actually I don’t think it ended up that way. Certainly one cannot count on it. Sometime I will have to check this out.
Khiyali: I now even have my own Gavalu- I will have to draw a board and play Ashta Chemma with Nannamma & Amma here in Mumbai soon!
